More volcano stuff

This is a cool (if ADHD) movie of various lava flows. I am a little disappointed with some of the things that I have found on youtube. I was hoping for some sweet volcano videos but the ones I have seen are a little weak.

Two types of lava

This is a good video of aa. You can see that the flow is so slow that it really just sits there and cools. Not all that scary. Compare it to the pahoehoe flow below.

You can see that the viscosity really affects the shape and how it looks when it cools.

The pahoehoe also looks delicious!

Mt. Etna

This is a cool video of the eruption from Mt. Etna in italy. You can see that the force of the explosion is so great that it causes a lateral eruption to come out of the side of the volcano.

When it gets dark out, you can really see the cinders and bombs fly from this baby.

Oobleck

According the old favorite Wikipedia, Oobleck is a type of non Newtonian liquid that changes to a solid like object when pressure is applied.

I think this whole thing is in Portuguese, but the point it certainly not lost. It is a cool video that kind of makes me want to have a pool of oobleck in my class.

I would definitely try to incorporate it every day.

Absolute Zero

Instead of working on stuff I should, I am watching a great show on PBS about absolute zero. It deals with how they get down to 0 degrees kelvin. (Room Temp is 300 degrees).

To see this presented so well, as PBS does with most science topics, really makes you appreciate how much humans can do and understand and how much they will never be able to understand.

They also did a good job talking about what the heck we would do with things this cold. It really was a great show and now that it is finally over I can join the rest of America and watch all the losers in the first week of American Idol....

By the way, the end of the quarter is on Monday.

Wed- Earth science earthquake test review guide due. Life science review day (we'll be playing taboo)

Thurs- ES-Review the test
LS- Take DNA test. Review guides are up at robmward.com

Fri- ES- Movie day.... haven't decided which movie yet.
LS- Go over test

EARTHQUAKE!!

Man oh man.

Nothing like looking at those gym lights swing. I think getting killed in a high school gym would rank right up there in "depressing ways to die".

Who has visited me today?
