Life Science Wednesday 1/31/07

Life Science

We have been studying genetics and how they affect humans. We talked about traits being passed and the students have been working hard on learning how to set up punnet squares for things like widows peak and tongue rolling.

We are going to take these skills and start the mating lab. The students will flip a coin to decide what their baby will look like and then draw their child. It is BY FAR my favorite activity of the year. We will be working on this for the next two days. Feel free to ask them about it!

Due

Thursday- The two trait lab worksheet.

Monday- The punnett square worksheet.

Wednesday 1.24 Earth Science

Today we covered the basics of volcanoes. From the boundaries to hot spots and everything in between. I also touched on viscosity as it pertains to the lab we will be doing tomorrow about lava.

Remember:

The particles of hot materials are not hot.
The particles of red materials are not red.

The particles of viscous materials are not slower. It has to do with the particles' interation with other particles. Viscosity is a resistance to flowing.

Wednesday 1/24 Life Science

Today we covered the basics of Mendel's experiments and rehashed the differences between trait and chracteristic.

We also completed a simple activity that classified students by what traits they possesed.

Due

Fri- Quiz
Signed rules and expectation.

New Semester....... New Attitude

1/23/07

Hello blog readers! yes.... Both of you.

Today I sent home a revised edition of my rules and expectations. It is due signed by friday!

Its time for the new semester!! I am hoping that all of us can see this as a fresh start and the motivation to improve our weaknesses. Whether it is time management, note taking, or a simple attitude realignment, setting a goal and working to reach it is the difference between opening academic doors and scraping by with the bare minimum.

Its like Ghandi said. "Live like you'll die tomorrow and learn like you will never die."

Life Science!!

Monday 1/23

Today we went over the rules and talked about new points of emphasis for the semester after getting our new seating chart worked out. My goals for the semester are faster grading, better updating on missing work, and putting the hammer down for in class discipline. We also picked QOD teams and named them.

Then we talked about Mendel and basic genetics. They learned the difference between a trait and a chracteristic. These phrases may be interchangeable in the world at large, but in genetics, it's important to understand the difference.

Traits are options for chracteristics.

Ex. Hair color is a chracteristic. Brown hair is a trait.

Blue is a trait. Car color is a chracteristic.

Understanding the difference is a big step to understanding this chapter.

Earth Science!!

I have officially doubled the numebr of earth science classes that I have. Today we went over rules and QOD teams. Then I started on Volcanoes. We talked about general volcano information and finished by showing how subduction can heat the plate underneath and that less dense magma will find its way to the surface in the form of a volcano.

The missing entry

Coming up!!! Mutations!!!

Sorry about the delay.

I have been up in Warroad taking in the old city, some basketball (it exists up there), and of course a little hockey. They lost to Roseau but they are still a force in single A.

All classes.

Thursday-
Study day. The coloring sheet and flip book in LS was

Friday-
Tests all around! Woo Hoo!

Monday- Talk about and assign missing work. Missing tests must be made up by tues.
I also gave them a break and we started the euro trip from two years ago. I love to talk about the trip and get the kids thinking about travelling.

Tuesday- (Plan) Go over the corrected tests and start talking about genetics or volcanoes.

The end of the quarter is this friday......:-)

LIFE SCIENCE

Today we learned the stages of mitosis which can be summed up in the word PMAT. We talked about the importance of mitosis in the scheme of the entire cell cycle and how it contributes to the development of more somatic cells.

We also learned the mitosis song. The lyrics can be found on my web page here

DUE

The quiz corrections are due tomorrow and I will also be handing out the test review guides.

The test and test review are on Friday.

Earth Science

Today I handed back the quizes and we talked about earthquakes. We talked about actual waves from the focus and what types of surface waves there were. We then started on the richter scale.

DUE

Thus- The quiz corrections

Fri- The movie review guide that they will get at the beginning of class.

Earth Science For Monday

Today we reviewed the test from before Christmas. The scores were quite good!!

DUE

Tues- Poster for earthquakes
Thursday- Quiz corrections
Friday- Test and test review

Life Science Monday 1/8 Chromosomes

Today we talked about animals and the number of chromosomes in living organisms. We discussed what a gene is and whatr traits in a human are.

We also talked about the difference between body cells and sex cells (sperm and egg). Make sure that you know the difference and why the number of chromosomes in sperm and egg is half as many as a somatic cell.

Tomorrow we will start to talk about the four phases of mitosis and dicuss centrioles and spindle fibers. We will also discuss cytokenisis in animal and plant cells.

I also handed back the quizzes and the students have the opuurtunity to correct their mistakes on a seperate sheet of paper for 1/2 credit.

DUE:

Tuesday- Worksheet.
Wed- Quiz corrections................... They will also be getting the test review on Wednesday!
Thursday- This will be a study day.
Friday- We will have the test and the review guide is due.

8th Grade Thursday 1/4/07

8th Grade Earth Science

Today we discussed how the different stresses from the earth crusts transmits energy to rocks in the form of folds and bends in the rocks. We learned the 2nd letter rule in anticlines and synclines.

As we learned the different ways that rocks can fold and bend, we took the time to go on a pictorial field trip to different geological structures around the world and talked about how their locations relate to the known tectonic plates.

Discuss

How the plate movement can bend rock and what the names of the bends.
How early earth formed.
What the types of stresses are.
What the types of faults are.

Due Fri 1/5

Quiz on last two days.
We will be talking about earthquakes and drawing faults and stresses individually.

7th Grade Thursday 1/4/07

Please forgive me for my mispellings and incorrect grammar in my posts. I do apologize in advance for the many errors I plan on overlooking.

7th Grade Science

Today we discussed a number of things! We talked about the phases of the cell
cycle and what occurs in each phase. We also discussed the importance of cells regenerating in the human body.

Finally, we talked about certain cells that cannot regenerate and how this relates to the G0 phase. I also brought up the sensitive issue of stem cell research and I was amazed with how many of the students had a firm grasp ( and opinions) on the issue. We finished with a talk about cancer and uncontrolled cell growth.

What to discuss.

Ask to see the chart that they created in class today and have them explain the different shapes of DNA and the steps of the cell cycle. Be sure that they are ready for the short quiz tomorrow.

Due Friday 1/5

A quiz on the last two day's material.
Make sure the life cycle drawing was checked by me.

Happy New Year!

Happy new year everyone..... I know I thought the break was too long but maybe it was just me. Feel free to email me with ideas for the class or the website!

I am hoping that this blog is a reference for students and parents to help with keeping up with their science class.

Please note that when I summarize each class, it is a generalization and each class may not have done exactly the same activity.

I will also list the homework or review that I expect from each class.

7th Grade Life Science

Today we began to talk about the difference between chromosomes and chromatin. We also talked about life cycles as an introduction to the cell cycle. Besure to check the powerpoint for help.
